Forum: 'High-speed' rail won't beat air, road travel
When is high-speed rail not high-speed rail? When it rolls on U.S. rail tracks. On Oct. 28, the Department of Transportation gave out $2.4 billion in grants to high-speed rail projects. This is on top of the $8 billion that was included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, commonly known as the stimulus package.

On June 17, the Federal Railroad Administration asked states for proposals for spending the $8 billion of stimulus money that Congress allocated to high-speed rail. Which raises a question: Would you pay $1,000 so someone - probably not you - can ride high-speed trains less than 60 miles a year?
